I am the Welfare Benefits Adviser for the Newcastle Mitochondrial clinic. I have been involved in advice work for 40 years – initially in Citizens Advice and then in Newcastle Welfare Rights Service where I began giving advice to Mitochondrial patients.
Over the past 4 years we have achieved over £1.4 million in annualised benefit claims. The benefits system is very complex and filling in the forms is a challenge. It’s difficult to explain how fatigue can take over your life – coupled with a lack of understanding of the multi organ nature of the condition. It’s vital to get it right when filling in the forms and to submit the all-important medical evidence.
